Open Water Swim Sessions
Open water swimming is usually the most daunting and least practiced of the three triathlon disciplines. Getting access to water that is deemed safe to swim in combined with the culture shock of swimming in deep & dark waters prevents many a budding triathlete from venturing past pool based sprints. Mansfield Tri Club have been fortunate over the last few years to secure a swimming slot at Colwick Country Park.
The open water swim sessions take place between 15th May and 28th August every Saturday afternoon between 15:00 & 17:00 (See our forum for details).
As with any sport there are associated risks but we do everything we can to mitigate these risks for both yourself and your fellow club members. The continued success of these swim sessions is dependant on the following conditions:
Membership of Mansfield Triathlon Club is a mandatory condition placed on the club by the City Council, no membership = no swim.
Try to arrive early & bring £1 for parking & £1.50 for swimming (to be handed to the wardens by the session leader). In the interests of saving the planet / money, try and arrange to car share where possible. This can be done via the members forum.

Get on the forum or better still, come along to one of our Wednesday swim sessions for a chat and a practice swim. In addition to calming your first time nerves we’ll also be able to give you an indication of how likely you are to drown.Jargon Buster

| Wetsuit (Triathlon specific) | Goggles / Mask | Swim cap (Brightly coloured) |
| Drafting | Look for a swimmer that is a little faster than you and follow them approximately half a meter behind. You will be pulled along at a faster speed and with less effort than when swimming alone. It’s not cheating either, but before you get cocky, make sure they are good at sighting (see below). |
| Sighting | The act of picking out a landmark to use as a navigational aid, looking up every eight strokes or so to make sure you are taking the most direct route. Most swim strokes will have a natural bias to either the left or right side. Without sighting you will go off course and add extra distance to your swim. |
| Bi-lateral breathing | The ability to breathe on each side. Particularly useful when the water is choppy on one side or to keep an eye on the pack. |
| Weil’s Disease | Read all about it here: www.leptospirosis.org It’s rare but well worth knowing what to look out for. |
