Group Bike Rides

Group rides are organised most weekends on our Forum and almost always start and finish at Forest Town Welfare (see map). These are mostly on quiet roads and at a pace that is relatively comfortable for the majority of cyclists. As with any club activity we try to cater for all abilities, but you will need a certain level of fitness and stamina to go the distance.

Riding on the open roads is not without its dangers, for this reason, group rides are reserved for adults only. We hold regular coached cycle track training sessions at Forest Town which are ideal for our juniors and also any member wanting to improve their bike handling skills.

What do I need for a group ride?

  • A well maintained road bike (a.k.a racing bike)
  • A cycle helmet which conforms to British Safety Standards. Mansfield Tri Club actively encourages the use of helmets for all cycling activities. Whatever your views, please don’t turn up without one.
  • A drink. Either energy drink or water. Dehydration drastically reduces your performance & can ruin your ride.
  • Spares & Tool kit. Usually consisting of; A mini cycle pump, 1 or 2 inner tubes, multi tool, a couple of tyre levers, puncture repair patches (self adhesive) & a 10cm length of old tyre if you have any.
  • Mobile phone. Make sure that each rider has your number and that you have theirs. Useful for when you get separated.
  • Cash & possibly a credit card. For buying more drinks and food en route or if it all goes pear shaped, jump in a taxi!

Cycling etiquette

There are a few rules of the road and points of etiquette to take onboard when group riding both for yours and your fellow cyclists safety. For example: there is a system of hand signals which you should make yourself aware of to highlight any obstacles or dangers in the road. If you are not aware of these or it’s your first group ride, please have a talk with one of the group before you set off.

Cycle Track Sessions

We are fortunate to have an outdoor banked cycle track situated at Forest Town Welfare (see map). This is ideal for juniors and adults alike as it is a safe and traffic free environment in which to learn new bike skills, have a blast round or just test out some new equipment. We also do the occasional brick session on there, consisting of biking and running, which is ideal preparation for triathlon transitions.

Throughout the summer months we block book the cycle track, usually on Monday evenings for an hour or two of coached sessions. Keep an eye on the club calendar for dates and times and as always, if you have any questions, post them on the forum.
Although mountain bikes are fine to use on the track, we are currently looking to aquire some small framed road bikes which can be used by our members that do not have access to a racing bike.

The equipment required for cycle track riding is more or less the same as is listed above for road riding, with the exception of mobile phone & cash, although, there is a fully licensed bar on the premises which sells various ‘snacks’ so a bit of money could come in handy.
